There is no doubt that shared workspaces have the ability to make a positive change to the traditional workplace environment.

Richard Branson has a great philosophy for starting a new business venture – there are a few things that he considers. When starting Virgin Airlines, he was just a passenger on the traditional airlines in the ’70s, but he used these airlines a lot, to travel to different continents. He was of the opinion that he could offer a better airline, offering certain luxuries. The staff and airline itself would make traveling far more fun and not so dull and boring. Most importantly, passengers would get a real choice of how they would like to travel according to their budget. Once he makes up his mind, he puts the wheels in motion. “Screw it, just do it” is a phrase he is well-known for saying. You see, Richard Branson is a disruptor of traditional industries. He brings a fresh perspective to industries where he believes he can make a positive difference.

How Shared Workspaces Promote Change

What has this all got to do with shared workspaces? Well in my viewpoint, a lot.

It has been proven that the majority of people simply get more done when they have dedicated spaces to go to for specific tasks. It just makes sense to be able to go to an office to get work done. It structures the day, and the distractions of trying to get work done whilst sitting at home or in cafes are not there. Top achievers in any field know this. It is unlikely that Usain Bolt did all his technical and physical training at his house. Instead, he went to the gym and track to train.

In the not-too-distant past, if you were a small business, individual or a startup, and needed office space, you would need to find a reasonably priced small office, sign a lengthy contract, get your own furniture, internet and then ensure that daily non-work related tasks such as cleaning, coffee etc are covered. This is a lot of effort and financial commitment just for an office. It certainly suits the landowner much more than the person actually paying, which is the customer.

Shared workspaces have put the customer at the centre of Offices as a Service. Customers should feel that they can use the service as and when it is required. At the end of the day, the property asset is not the customer’s – the customer is purely looking for a service. You don’t rent an aeroplane to fly to London, you buy an air ticket.

Shared spaces also include all the relevant business tools and services you require, included in the price. If you buy a daily pass, internet, furniture, cleaning, and electricity (in some cases, backup power) are all included. All you have to do is make the decision to use the space. It is that simple. No extra costs, no surprises and, most importantly, no financial risk. Shared working spaces are making offices available to a far wider audience.

Depending on the design of the shared space, they can create a feeling of motivation and a sense of community. It is nice to be among other like-minded people during work hours. It also enables you to get to know the business community, especially in smaller towns or if you are from outside of town looking to meet some locals. In short, shared spaces have personalities.

If you get addicted to distractions, it will eliminate your creativity. Not having great spaces to carry out your business or work may lead to you having to work in places where it is easy to get distracted. Co-working has changed all this and made it easier for anyone to have exceptional office experiences to get work done.

This is why we believe shared offices are the future of offices and they are certainly making a positive change to how office space is paid for and used.

Co.Unity started in Hermanus, a town that has so much to offer in terms of lifestyle. This coastal town is safe, with awesome beaches and mountains. The missing piece of the puzzle was spaces for people to work on a temporary or semi-permanent basis. We wanted to offer an exceptional experience, clean office spaces, funky furniture and artwork, high-speed internet, backup generator power and a café on the premises. Most importantly, we wanted to offer flexible payment options. With these, customers choose whether they want to use our space, with no legal, onerous contracts. In short, we offer a comprehensive service and it is gaining in popularity.
